Personal Guarantee and Debenture Positions: 6 UK Invoice Finance Providers

Most UK invoice finance facilities are secured by a debenture (an all-asset charge over the company) as standard, and a personal guarantee from directors on top of that for smaller or newer businesses. This is about the lender's security requirements, not your credit risk or acceptance odds. This page covers only 6 providers, the ones whose review page on this site states a position; each row is our editorial summary, not a figure the provider publishes, and the rest of the market is not covered here.

What debenture and personal guarantee actually mean

A debenture is a charge registered at Companies House giving the lender security over the company's assets generally, not just the invoices being financed. Providers typically register one on every facility as standard, regardless of company size. A personal guarantee is a separate, additional commitment from a director personally, on top of the debenture, usually reserved for smaller, newer or higher-risk facilities. Sole traders and partnerships are personally liable by default in UK law regardless of any guarantee, since there is no separate limited company to shield them.

Across the 6 providers in this table the pattern is the same: a personal guarantee is described as more likely for smaller or newer facilities, and less likely, or negotiable, for larger businesses with audited accounts and a well-spread debtor book. Where a threshold is stated it ranges from £500,000 to £1,000,000. With a sample this small, treat it as a starting point for your own questions, not a market norm.

A caveat on this matrix
“A provider's own stated threshold is a starting position, not a guarantee of the outcome for your specific facility. Debtor quality, customer concentration and your own trading history can move a provider away from its stated norm in either direction. Ask directly rather than assume the table above applies exactly to your case.”
